Safety Precautions

  • Oxygen supports combustion — no open flames, smoking, or sparks near oxygen
  • Post 'Oxygen in Use' signs at bedside and door
  • Verify order for flow rate — too much O2 can suppress respiratory drive in COPD patients
  • Check behind ears and under tubing for skin breakdown
  • Monitor SpO2 continuously when titrating oxygen
  • Ensure backup oxygen source for patient transport
